  • Filmmaking: Behind the Camera and Computer

    In this course, we will be learning everything that happens behind the camera and during the editing process while filming a movie. Whether it be trying to find the perfect shot, angle, or scenery, campers will be able to learn all about trying to film the perfect movie to their desire, while even getting to hold and use a camera. Once finished with getting all film needed, campers will then move behind the computer and learn all about editing the footage they have collected. In addition to this in-depth learning of filming and editing, campers who participated in the “Filmmaking: The Creative Process” course will be able to use the stories they composed in that course and bring them to life in this course. Even if you didn’t participate in the previous course, there is no need to worry, as you will still be able to fully participate in every aspect of the camp.

    *Note: This course will only include the filming and editing part of filmmaking and will not include any script writing or creative process.
  • Filmmaking: The Creative Process

    In this course, our main focus is the scripting, story boarding, testing, and overall creative process that occurs in order to make a movie. Throughout the week, we will individually learn about these different techniques and steps that Hollywood-level directors go through in order to make the movies we all know and love. Whether it be through drawing scenes, writing a script, or even watching a film itself about this process, campers will creatively engage in this course, with their imaginations being the key to it all. There is no limit to creativity in this course, as we will be also exploring all types of genres, from action, to comedy, to fiction, and even some horror - the possibilities are endless.
    *Note: This course will only include the process into filmmaking and will not include any work behind the camera or editing process.
  • Lights, Camera, Action: An Introduction to Visual Storytelling (Interviews, Animation, Movies, Short Stories)

    In the ever-evolving world of electronic communications, the art of visual storytelling will continue to play a vital role in global messaging. In anticipation of this, it is just as important for students to have an understanding of the techniques, reasoning, and context behind the camera of the videos that they watch today. In this course, students will explore various eras of film, advertisements, character development patterns, and shot techniques that have worked to create the stories that they know and love. They will do this by watching iconic films, commercials, and other various forms of media. In their reflection, they will work to recreate these iconic characteristics of timeless visual media. The end of the course will involve the students creating a visual story (interview, animation, movie, short story etc.) using the lessons that they have observed in their studies.
  • Little Bits Technology

    Become an inventor for a week as you bring your creative ideas to life with LittleBits, a platform of easy-to-use electronic building blocks. Throughout the week, you will learn about and use an Invention Cycle that will guide you through the invention and engineering design process. Campers will also learn foundational coding concepts while creating their own games, smart machines, and more with LittleBits’ block-based programming, based on Google’s Blockly language. Join us for a fun, hands-on, interactive week!
  • Movie-Making in your Hands

    In this course, we will be learning and exploring all aspects of making a movie, just like the professionals. You will be able to experience the scripting, story boarding, filming, and editing of your very own original story. Campers will spend individual days implementing these steps as they work toward making their very own movie. Those who are not able to complete their entire film by the end of the week will have polished scenes to share and the opportunity to finish their work at home. Be sure you to take time to view your favorite movies to gain some inspiration for you very own creation!
  • Young Graphic Designers

    The field of graphic design is continually growing. Designers are needed for website development, advertising, architecture, and much more. Are you interested in creating art using technology? In this camp, you will learn the basic principles of graphic design. Campers will create original designs and build artwork using Photoshop. These skills are the building blocks for becoming a true graphic designer.
  • Lights, Camera, Action: iPad Films

    Ages 9 - 13

    Use your imagination, creativity, and love of technology in a study of film making basics. Using iPads, campers will learn how to write scripts, plan, and sketch storyboards, film scenes, and edit their own short films. Campers will have the opportunity to make stop-action films, music videos, and feature films, as well. In a fun culmination, we will host a film festival where all films will be screened! Take a walk down the “red carpet” as we celebrate your cinematic masterpieces at a special screening at the end of the week.
  • Minecraft

    Ages 7 – 12

    Come enjoy a week exploring the virtual world of Minecraft. Daily adventures await every morning when campers enter pre-constructed worlds to solve puzzles, overcome obstacles, and build virtual communities. Children will be able to exercise their creative muscles in the Minecraft camp’s very own Minecraft server. While set in “creative mode,” campers will be able to utilize unlimited resources to build whatever they can imagine and then explore each other’s creations. Hawken camp will supply laptops and mice, and a Hawken IT staff member will be available to assist children with computer skills as well as Minecraft gameplay.
  • Create Your Own Trading Cards

    Ages 9 – 13

    From baseball and football cards to Pokemon and movie-themed cards, kids have loved collecting, trading, and sorting cards. In this unique one-week program, campers will create their own set of cards based on a theme of their choice. If you have a passion for sports, movies, animals, or anything else, this is an opportunity for you to design a set of cards using google images and Photoshop. At the end of the week, campers will each have their own unique and beautiful set of cards. There will even be an opportunity to try and create “relic” cards that contain bits of history such as jerseys or costumes. Don’t miss this chance to be the envy of the card trading community.
